Under 30 Minutes Skirt

Here is a picture of a great little skirt I made last night which took me less than 30 minutes and cost me under $1.00. Hurray!! After telling a few people what I made it out of, I'm kinda scared to share it with the world. But whatever, I think it's cute so I'll share. Can you guess what I used?

Promise not to laugh, or make fun of me. Please.

Ok. I made it out of a pillowcase. I bought the pillowcase for 50 cents. The whole roll of pink trim was only $1.00, so it probably works out to like 10 cents for the amount I used.  And for the waist - I didn't feel like playing with zippers last night, so I just made an elastic waist casing for some elastic I had on hand.

I think for under $1.00 it's great! I hope you liked this quick and easy skirt (and that you're not laughing at me) :)

PS - Isn't the polka dot umbrella great. It actually was raining and I wanted to get these pictures taken while it was still light out.

Clothing Re-Do - Aloha Dress

A few weeks ago I came across this blog -  New Dress A Day.  The blog author Marisa is creating an outfit a day for 365 days. That's 365 items of clothing for only 365 dollars. $1.00 a day. She shops at thrift stores and creates some amazing outfits out of the clothes that she finds. After reading her blog I was inspired to try this myself. Well, not the 365 days of it, but just refashioning clothes.

So off I went to my local thrift store and picked this muumuu up for $3.99.  Now this dress is way too long and way too big, but I love the color and I thought I could do something with it.
Before

For some reason I cannot get my camera to capture the true color of the dress which is more like this.

So to begin with I took off the sleeves -

Then I cut off the bottom ruffle.

After taking it in about 3 inches on both sides, hemming, and finishing the armholes I ended up with this......I call it my Aloha Dress.

I paired it with a belt I got at the Thrift store for $1, and leggings I bought in Ireland for $4. A whole outfit for under $10. That makes me a happy camper :)

I would love to hear what you think. Your comments are always appreciated!

Pink Shag Pillow

So the other day I stumbled upon a great tutorial for a Shag Pillow by V and Co and knew I had to make one for Emily's room. I've been thinking about redecorating it for a while now and this pillow will be perfect.

Isn't it adorable

I had been planning on making this for a while now and I had the pink knit fabric in my tickle truck so when I came across a pink fleece blanket at the thrift store for $1.99, I knew it would be perfect.

This is what I came up with. I made it longer, more like a bolster pillow, and of course it had to be pink!

Now I'll be honest. I read the tutorial a few weeks ago, and sewed this from memory. Well my memory isn't as good as it used to be and I cut the strips 2 inches long instead of 4, so it isn't as shaggy as it should be, but I still like it and so does Em. What do you think?

Plankets

With our trip coming up faster than we know it I decided to make both kids a "Planket".  I found this "Planket Tutorial" at The Crafter's File and changed it up a bit.

Now Miss Em has been to the fabric store with me a few times, and of course she spotted the Rapunzel fleece.  They keep it right by the checkout. If this isn't a set up for parents, I don't know what is!

Since the Disney fleece is $25.00 a meter, and I'm cheap, I decided to only use the Disney fleece on the pillows and make the blanket out of plain fleece which is only $7 a meter.

I changed the pattern a bit as you can see. Instead of sewing the blanket onto the pillow, I attached buttons to the pillow and made button loops on the blanket. I couldn`t quite wrap my head around how to use the blanket if it was attached to the pillow.  Now the kids can just slip their heads in between the buttons and the blanket stays attached to the pillow.

I also created a strap with button holes so we can attached them on the outside of the kids backpacks.

Here`s a picture of Miss Em pretending she`s on the plane sleeping.

I`ll be sure to let you know how they work out!

Miss Em's Easter Dress

So about a week before Easter I was in the fabric store, rooting through the remnant bin when I came across this pretty pink pregathered fabric (Maybe once I've sewn for a while I will know the name but for right now I have no clue.) and knew I wanted to make an Easter dress for Miss Em.

I found a super cute tutorial for a Maxi Tube Dress and loosely followed it to get the basics and this is what I came up with.

Miss Em's Easter Dress

I love it!! It looks so adorable on but there was no way I would be able to convince Miss Em today!

Have I told you lately how much I love my sewing machine. It's a Brother CE5000 Project Runway Limited Edition Computerized Sewing Machine. Look at what it can do! I used the tiny flowers to hem the bottom of the dress :o)

I will be sure to add a photo of Miss Em in the dress the next time she wears it.
